Now a team of scientists has used that satellite data to identify a human signal amid the seasonal fluctuations of the greenhouse gas. the OCO-2 data products, the V9 data has undergone this validation analysis. The OCO-2 measurements in all observation modes: nadir, glint and target are compared to TCCON to evaluate potential biases in the satellite data (see Wunch et al., 2017 and Wunch et al., 2011). In addition to the comparisons to TCCON, the OCO-2 V9 data has Dec 27, 2020 · Hence, the study also considered data from a tower network and data that simulates the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite. Since OCO-2 launched in July 2014 and the first observations were under scientific analysis, no actual data were used for this simulation. Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) is an American environmental science satellite which launched on 2 July 2014. A NASA mission, it is a replacement for the Orbiting Carbon Observatory which was lost in a launch failure in 2009. It is the second successful high-precision (better than 0.3%) CO 2 observing satellite, after GOSAT. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2, or OCO-2, is an Earth satellite mission designed to study the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide globally and provide scientists with a better idea of how carbon is contributing to climate change.
The OCO-2 MIP The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) model intercomparison project (MIP) is a collaboration among atmospheric CO 2 modelers to study the impact of assimilating OCO-2 retrieval data into atmospheric inversion models. The results from the set of simulations performed by this project have been released as a level-4 flux product.
In the days following the devastating loss of the OCO-1 mission, the JPL project team reassembled to respond to requests from NASA/HQs about the state of spares that could be used for an OCO re-flight, and the costs and schedule for building another OCO observatory. In this study we present the retrieval of the column-averaged dry air mole fraction of carbon dioxide (XCO2) from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite observations using the RemoTeC algorithm, previously successfully applied to retrieval of greenhouse gas concentration from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT). The data retrieval method that Yung and his colleagues designed for OCO-2 compares the light spectra collected by the satellite to a model of how light spectra would look—based on the laws of physics and knowledge of how efficiently CO 2 absorbs sunlight. OCO-2 is the only mission focusing solely on the behavior of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
